The North London Hospice
provides medical care for those suffering from advanced cancer,
motor neurone disease and other terminal illnesses. It also offers emotional
and practical

this comprehensive, specialised care and the hospice relies on donations and
legacies from
generous people in the community to ensure that its care continues into the
future.

“My brother
Michael was about to die, leaving his wife and two-year old daughter. He was
moved into North London Hospice and was nursed with care, patience, dignity
and love.
We were given the chance to say goodbye to him in a way that so many never have
the
opportunity to do.” Richard, patients brother
North London Hospice has
served the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey since
1984 and was the first multi-faith hospice in the UK.
The wide range of services
it provides ensure that every year over 1300 terminally ill patients,
their families, friends and carers can all receive the medical, emotional and
practical support
that they need.
The building in Woodside
Park has an inpatient unit with 20 beds, providing 24 hour nursing
and medical care. One third of patients just come in for a few days, to sort
out any troublesome
symptoms or to give their carers a break, and then go home again. The day centre
is located here
too; a warm and inviting place where amongst other things patients can try their
hand at painting
or creative writing, have some reflexology, or just sit and relax.
“The hospice
brought all kinds of equipment to our house so that my husband was able to be
looked
after at home – including a special mattress to make him more comfortable
in bed. They showed me
how to give him his medicine and I knew I could turn to them for help when I
felt that I couldn’t cope.”
Elizabeth, patient’s wife
Most patients are cared
for at home – where they want to be. The Community Care Team help to make
this possible by arranging all aspects of care and offer advice on solving practical
and financial problems.
“When my wife
Betty died at the hospice I wished I had died too. The hospice gave me bereavement
counselling every week – it was strange at first but slowly they helped
me want to live again.”
John, hospice volunteer
A qualified team offer bereavement counselling for up to 14 months after the patient has died.
All hospice services are
completely free of charge. Every year, more than £4 million is needed
to
provide this comprehensive, specialised care and as a registered charity, North
London Hospice
mainly relies on donations and legacies from generous people in the community
to ensure that its
care continues into the future.
