The town of Barnet Hertfordshire lies on the northern border of London and is the
most historic town in the borough of Barnet.

THE THREE BARNETS
The town is split into three areas High Barnet(Chipping Barnet), New Barnet and East Barnet (often called the village).

Dating back to 1070 (High) Barnet was originally known as "Barnetto" and King John granted the town a market charter in 1199. St Johns Church (Barnet Church) was built in 1420 which was 51 years before the event that Barnet is associated with.

East Barnet church was built in the times of William the conquer and New Barnet arose from the building of the railway station that brought thousands from out of London to live in the suburbs.

We have history and heritage and I hope this web site will be judged by content
and not by design.

In 1471 the armies of the House of Lancaster and the House of York fought a bitter battle
at the northern edge of the town during the WAR OF THE ROSES. This was THE BATTLE OF BARNET and thousands died and are probably buried there. The Yorkist won and Warwick the kingmaker was slain.

Some say there are up to 10,000 bodies still buried somewhere up near Hadley common.

It can be boasted that Barnet is possibly the only town in the country that had three
kings sleeping there in one night. This was they night before the battle and they were
King Henry VI, King Edward IV and the Duke of Gloucester who later became King
Richard the third.

In the 17th and 18th century the town became an important route in and out of London with over 150 coaches passing through the High Street every day.
It was in the High Street that Charles Dickens used as the meeting point of OLIVER TWIST and the Artful Dodger.
Dickens himself used to partake in the liquid refreshment at The Red Lion. Samuel Pepys used to visit the town to and from his visits to the old well near Barnet hospital that has been there for centuries.
Barnet is also mentioned in H.G.Wells "The War of the Worlds"

Our BARNET FAIR has been here since 1588 when it was granted a charter by Queen Elizabeth I and has become a part of cockney slang.
