Situated
north of London,at the end of the Northern line, Barnet has
been written about since the 13th Century.
A focal point of the Town is Barnet Church (St John the Baptist)
at the top of the hill.
From the top of the tower it is the highest point between London
and York in the North and the Ural Mountains to the East.
To
give a perspective to the height of the church, when you walk
in there is a gold door knob on the right which is in line to
the top of St Paul's cathedral.
Well worth a visit and the people there are really friendly.
Comprising
of Chipping, High, New and East Barnet the district has many
businesses and shops.
The
spires in the High Street is a popular shopping Centre
and we have the Royal charter to hold a market
on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Our local football team, Barnet F.C are in the second division
of the Football League and bring
pride back to the town.
Barnet
(the town not the borough) is attracting more people into the
district due to its easy access into London and the clean fresh
air that can be found in many of the open spaces.
We have good schools, lovely parks and
an abundance of Public Houses (see the
drink page) This is due to Barnet being a
busy coaching stage in the past, as people traveled to and from
London.(see our History page)
"Oliver
limped slowly into the little town of Barnet, wondering at the
great number of Public Houses - every other house in Barnet
was a tavern large or small".
"Oliver
Twist" by Charles Dickens
