Barnet
v Barnet
Have
you ever seen a headline that says something like "Bomber arrested
in Barnet" and
you fear for your family? Sounds dramatic, doesn't it? It happened - but in Barnet the borough, not the town! When the borough was named Barnet back in 1965 it is a wonder why nobody had the sense to think up a new name that would avoid confusion. If they would name the borough Barnet why did they have the town hall in Hendon? Why did they not call the borough Hendon or Golders Green or Cricklewood? "Crime on the up in Barnet" is another headline that springs to mind. And you might think that the local police - who are doing a very good job in reaching out to the community - are to blame. BARNET4U had its roots in a headline from the Barnet Times that said "Basketball comes to Barnet." Great, we thought, our children can get into that and at last we have an amenity that could help get kids off the street. Wrong . . . "Barnet" meant Cricklewood and we lost out again. We lost out when they knocked down an Olympic-size swimming pool in our neighbouring Finchley and build sports centres in areas like Hendon and Cricklewood - again. Barnet (the town) has no astro turf pitch but they do near Hendon. But, there again, Hendon, Colindale, Burnt Oak, Cricklewood (where is it?) are all Barnet so Barnet has all the facilities they need. They have even taken Barnet off the weather map. Perhaps we should get together a campaign. So let us know your views about Barnet being Barnet and if it has caused you any uncertainty about where you live. Come on Barnet! (the football team that represents the town of Barnet and NOT the borough). |
