Answer
BARNET4ME
Dear
Matt,
What
are your views on the Councils idea of moving Barnet Football
club to Burnt Oak?
Barnet4u
If there is one big issue in this town it is the disgusting
way our borough council have treated this
club.
Just because some of those in charge have no interest in football
they have done their best to
give a voice to the few that oppose the building of a new stadium
at Underhill.
They
offered the club a new ground in Burnt Oak and it will be interesting
when the gangs from
Burnt Oak and Graham Park (they have been fighting each other
for years (FACT: as reported
by a local Burnt Oak resident
I know) meet up with the chaps from Barnet. Take into account
the away fans from those clubs
with trouble makers and you have a recipe for violence on the
streets of the Labour controlled
district.
This is not scare mongering as those in power have no idea what
really happens on the streets.
The move to Montrose Park is just another political manoeuvre
from certain councilors at the
Town Hall (known locally as Mordor!) that is giving their party
a very bad name. I know of more
people who are getting fed up with the current leaders and there
are reports that there could be
a few surprises for those, who at the moment, are misusing their
power.
And a final word for those who live near Underhill and who vote
to get rid of Barnet F.C. Look to
the future when Barnet F.C have gone and when the land lays idle
and you enjoy the peace and
quiet until the builders turn up and before they know it they
have a housing estate (maybe for
illegal's or any others that the council choose to be on their
doorstep) and they wish for those
days when a couple of thousand people would peacefully turn up
on a Saturday afternoon to
watch our local team and the national sport". Watch this
space as some of the people of Barnet,
Herts are getting it together and if there is enough of them it
should be an interesting time in
the fight against political bullying.
BULL FIGHT
Dear Matt, The Old Bull arts
centre is up for auction and it looks like the council will get
rid of it.
What do you think?
M Bethune, Hadley
Well Mick,the
buzz on the streets is that the council are unaware that the majority
of people are
proud of the culture and artists that we produce locally.
I have heard a whisper that they are unaware that there is no
proper music venue in our area
now that people are supping cups of coffee down at the old Torrington.
I have also heard on the grapevine that
they are unaware that they could do something good for
the community and for once not think of profit. For years a woman
named Pam Edwards has been
fighting for the right of the people of our town to have somewhere
that can be used for those of
all ages, all races - all seemingly unimportant to those who decide
what happens to this building.
Its probably too late to save this wonderful old building. I personally
would have had it as a music
venue, approached a brewery for backing and had different types
of music playing there every
night that the stage would not be used.
Then, in the day, the money earned from the evenings would enable
us to teach all aspects of
art - a proper local arts centre. I would be able to be contacted
at the bar where I would buy
Pam Edwards and all those who have tried to save the place a very
large drink!
OFFICE POLITICS
Dear Matt,
Any news on the Register Office in Wood Street
as I am getting married soon?
Brian Cornish, New Barnet
No, Brian,
it looks like you will have to get a cab and tie the knot in Colindale,
where you can also
report your robbery to your nearest 24 hour police station.
The word on the block is that the council want to move Barnet
Hospital to Colindale and that there
is a bit of wasteland on the old aerodrome that Barnet FC can
use for a pitch!
Perhaps in years to come our children will
walk through Barnet High street and look where Barnet
Church used to be (it is now ringing its bells in Colindale) before
they built flats. Far too many old
buildings are going in the area that could be put to good use
by our local community.
I have no understanding of why politicians never do what we put
them there to do but there are
a lot of people in the area who might be able to do something
about it if they got together and
let those politicians and those that govern know that they are
supposed to be on our side.
END of speech on the soapbox - but I really do hear the locals
grumble about our heritage that
is disappearing.
There are still many families that have lived in the area for
generations and some of the changes
are more important to them than to those who are new to the area.
If this town becomes just
blocks of flats I'm off to find a place that still maintains a
part of old England.
They've knocked down too many pubs in the high street anyway!!!
Good luck in your marriage mate, hope you get a flat!
TALLY HOPELESS
Dear Matt,
Is the same pea brain that developed the Finchley swimming pool
at large again as the planner of the
traffic flow in North Finchley. The old Gaumont had enough space
in front of it to have made a better
job of getting the traffic to move faster.
AND who was person (who obviously gets paid a considerable amount
of money) that decided to put
the a bus stop about ten steps away from a traffic lights so that
when the bus picks up passengers
it causes a tail back of traffic
D. T. Leicester Road, New Barnet
Before I answer I would like to state that this is all
written without prejudges. I
agree with
you DT, plus the idiots who park in the one lane available, especially
if you are in a hurry.
Maybe through this site we can get some answers. Maybe someone
can enlighten us about
the swimming pool too.
If it had stayed the same Olympic size, it would have been the
only one in London and perhaps
Finchley would have been under the spotlight in the 2012 Olympics.
Nice one D.T keep 'em coming
PITCH BATTLE - FIRST HALF
Dear Matt,
What are your views on the situation at Barnet Football Club?
Pat Nally, Mays Lane, Barnet
Well, Pat, I should not really answer that as I work
for a web site that is non-political, but what
politics has to do with football I will never know so here goes
and I hope I keep my job.
I have supported Barnet FC so long that I can remember going to
Wembley to see them play
Crooks Town in the '1959 Amateur Cup Final. I have seen them all
from the D'arcy brothers to
the great fun of watching Barry Fry's teams.
I must confess that since the kids have grown up I am a lapse
Barnet supporter but it is still one
of the first results I look for on a Saturday. Underhill has never
had a great pitch and in my youth
I played on better.
The ground is old and quaint and could be situated in any rural
town in Britain.
I saw a young Howard Kendell play there and shared in the celebrations
when we finally won
promotion to the professional league.
I believe a team should be in the town of its name and moving
Barnet FC is a bit like those
American teams who move from one city to another all for the sake
of the cash.
I read about local residents who are opposed to Barnet improving
Underhill but I cannot
understand why people are not proud of something that has been
there for all those years.
It's Barnet and we live and work in Barnet.
It is one of the few things that the council cannot take without
us knowing about it.
I heard that if Barnet got permission to improve the ground there
would be an astro turf for the
community.
We don't have one of those in Barnet (though there are others
in the borough -
thus the statement that we have astro turf pitches in Barnet!).
And if it can keep kids off the
streets and give them something to do it can only be a good thing.
I think the people who are
against these improvements should have a look at the wider issues
and help the club become a
real part of the community.
Not all football fans are thugs and I am sure that if thugs did
turn up our police will have it under
control.
Doesn't seem like a problem but the council are spending money
trying to bring more action
against the club, a decision probably decided by those who have
no interest in football or don't
even live around here.
You really started one there, Pat, and I hope this gets printed.
I would back a tiddly wink team
from Barnet if they were in the finals of the world tiddly wink
championship and I back things like
the Finchley boxing club in Bulwer Road.
Our kids need local heroes and, with the price of tickets to see
the top London teams, Underhill is
the place where dads can take their kids to their first game and
it is something that we can be
proud of (when they win).
Get behind Barnet FC and only think about moving if there ever
is a season when we would be
playing at Old Trafford away in a league match.
Apologies to those that oppose the rebuilding of Underhill but
I can only look at the situation as
a lover of football/sport and think if I ever lived near a football
ground I would find a good pitch
for my hot Dog Stand.
(Barnet4u does not necessarily agree with the views of Matt-Webmaster)
PITCH BATTLE - SECOND HALF
Dear Matt,
I oppose the Underhill development but you should remember there
are two sides to a story and it does
not mean that we hate football. The views of those opposed to
the scheme have been stated and you
do not express the views of the majority.
B.C New Barnet
Sorry, BC,
I was not assuming that I was right and you were wrong. But can
you get a couple of
thousand people together peacefully on a Saturday afternoon to
state your case?.
You have your right of say and I have mine. I take it you never
saw Jimmy Greaves score one of
the best goals of his life on that muddy slope of a pitch.
Or taken your kids and stood on the side while those warming up
would run along the side of the
pitch giving the kids the high five. Or go and watch Arsenal reserves
and the likes of Bergkamp
and Cole, which gives the club the extra revenue to keep going.
Perhaps you have but there
again I love my football and could never imagine the situation
that you are in.
I can only speak as I feel and see that if the development of
Underhill helps our local community
it can only be a good thing and as that is the truth I hope my
answer gets printed.
BEST BAR NONE
Dear Matt,
Lighten up, your passion could drive us all away. What do you
think of our local watering holes?
Geoff Trauntner, High Barnet
Ahh, thanks Geoff, you have brought me down to earth
with one of my favourite subjects.
You do not have to be a drunk to appreciate the many bars and
taverns that litter our small town.
Thanks to the stagecoaches that used to travel through the High
Street there is an abundance of
pubs where the locals while away many an hour.
My job as Man Around The Town means I have to visit many of them
to see that our heritage
stays intact and that the locals are supplied like they have been
in the town for centuries.
It is not my job to judge a pub individually but the general standard
in town is very good.
We have music pubs, sports pubs, quiet pubs and those that people
of my age only visit during
the daytime.
There is still a "local" feel to the place with different
pubs having their own local clientele and
some of them feeling like you are in Dodge City when you open
the door and those inside
realise you are a stranger.
But I get about and keep my eyes and ears open, listening to you
and reporting back via this
page.
Generally, it is safe to walk into a pub around here as long as
you do not cause trouble.
To those of us who know the watering holes regularly having a
drink in Barnet is a great way
to hear the gossip, discuss a subject, find a plumber or just
to get out of the house.
If you want to meet up, Geoff, I would be delighted to accept
a pint off you and discuss this
subject further.
YOUR SHOUT!
Dear Matt,
I think I know you, don't you drink at the *****
?
Malcolm, Woodville Road
Who knows, Malcolm, I could be that man sitting quietly
in the corner or up at the bar sharing a
few pints with his mates.
The point is not who I am but what we as a community are thinking
and the answers we can find.
I cannot give advice on how to save a marriage or what time of
the year to plant potatoes but
we might be able to share a view and discuss it via this page.
If you think it is me just tap me on the shoulder and say "What's
yours?" and even if it is not me
you have done a community thing and brought a stranger a drink.
BAND AID
Hey Matt,
What did you think of the East Barnet festival?
Tim Burbridge, East Barnet Village
Well,
Tim, obviously you have some concern to ask that question and
I was disappointed that
there was not one local group playing at the event.
I know personally many of the musicians that live in this area
and the way their art has been
treated by all those who have the power to change things is typical.
There are many bands and
musicians in the area and have been for years.
East Barnet Festival started out backing these bands and giving
the locals the chance to hear
the sounds of Barnet. It now seems to be a commercial venture
and there was a definite
absence of many local faces with only the appearance of David
Jones making it an official
music festival.
I have no say in the matter and can only report on what I heard
and saw. There is unrest in
the camp and once again the local musicians are not heard.
They say they are going to do something about that.
STONE BONKERS
Dear Matt,
I was more than a little
puzzled and angered to read in one of the local papers that Barnet
Council is
planning several spending cuts in order to cancel out the £6
million they have overspent already this
year.
This is said to include not filling 12 staff vacancies in adult
social services, (those who work for some
of the most vulnerable people in our community), and reducing the
street enforcement budget.
Could you please tell me, then, which "genius" it was
who authorised the relaying of all the paving
extending from Henry Road for approximately 1/4 of a mile along
East Barnet Road?, (and at what cost?)
Did anyone consult Councilor Matthew Offord, a Conservative for
Hendon Ward which is nowhere near
Barnet?
He, according to the report, said that it was possible some non-urgent
road works would be postponed
until the next financial year.
Do any members of our council actually speak to each other when
deciding how to spend OUR money?
Angry council tax payer, New Barnet
Dear Angry council tax payer (and you could be
one of thousands) out here on the streets politicians
and councilors do not think that we ordinary people care about issues
like this but in all the haunts
I frequent people talk about the money the council waste (like suing
Barnet football club yet again
to satisfy a few egos and to waste more of our money) and I listen.
There
are probably people out there who have a bigger insight to this
issue than I have but I can
tell you that people are getting fed up with the spending of the
current council and they are the
people who know how to spell X.
In a perfect life we would vote for people like us to represent
us, but we get people who know
nothing about (or care about) what really goes on in our day to
day life.
Spending money on re-laying pavements looks good as does all the
signs put up stating all the
good things the council does.
(Pity the signs that greet you when you enter the town of Barnet
does not even mention the battle)
Barnet council spend £24,000 a day taking children with special
needs to and from school.
That's £120,000 per week, £480,000 a month and that's
£5,760,000 a year.
Is there not someone within that town hall at Hendon that can think
it might be better to build an
all purpose school in Barnet for ALL these kids so that they do
not have to spend up to 2/3 hours
a day traveling?????
Did you know there is not a school for autistic children in Barnet
and yet they want to sue Barnet
Football club yet again (and make the pavements look nice?).
To be honest an answer to your question is beyond me and my mates
down the pub and if you
want to take this further, with perhaps responses from other people,
I suggest you contact YOUR SHOUT on the main BARNET4U site.
Meanwhile enjoy your 1/4 mile walk down that pavement and think
of Councilor Matthew
Offord every time you step on a crack (or see that a dog has fouled
the footpath!)
SCENE SOUGHT
Dear Matt,
A gay friend of mine has just moved to Barnet and reckons there's
no "scene" in the town.
Do you know of any gay pubs or clubs locally?
Ben, East Barnet
Well, Ben, off the cuff I have never been down that avenue
and my mate Harry hasn't been
there either! (or so he is always telling me!)
I can only relate on what goes on in the watering holes around the
town and if you guys are
in our company and want to share a conversation or a laugh it could
become "your scene."
But there is a gay Barnet scene and you can get more information
at http://www.barnetgay.co.uk/
Hope that will be of help to you Ben.
I
also know that BARNET4U welcomes contributions from all sections
of our community, regardless
of race, religion or lifestyle so if you e-mail
contact@barnet4u.co.uk
they will make sure you can
get more information and perhaps make this an issue.
IT'S A CRIME
Dear Matt,
What do you think about the crime rate in Barnet?
A concerned resident of Barnet
Nice topic. Each and every one of us civilised people,
want to live in a crime free society.
Read the local papers and you see headlines such as "Crime
rate soars in Barnet" and once again
the name of our town is taken in vain.
Read the report and its somewhere else in this vast borough.
If we look at it locally it's not so bad and it will get better
if the local police fulfil their promises.
Living in the town for most of my life I have got to know many people
from a cross section of the
community and I will bet you that if I asked them what they would
want to see happen to keep
crime down in our area it would be to get Barnet Police station
opened 24 hours a day and when
criminals were caught that judges
would give them sentences which would get them out of our lives
for as long as possible.
I hear the stories of ordinary people being robbed from their home,
their car or their person
and each and everyone agrees that they would give the culprits a
good hiding if they caught them.
But no…you will get done and the one that messes up your life
gets off and the victim serves the
sentence.
If you go to court for a speeding fine or non payment of council
tax you will be treated as a criminal
by those who are judgemental. Rob 75 houses and you get a year sentence,
reduced to six months,
which you do not have to serve because you said sorry and there
you have the justice dealt out by
some who are Muppets.
People get robbed and don't bother to tell the police because they
think nothing will be done,
and if it is the courts will never bring back what you have lost
so we forget it and get on with life.
Yobs make your life a misery but the police can't do anything so
you have to put up with it.
In my youth you respected your elders as you knew you would get
a thump. I know of many in
the area who would get stuck in if they saw an old lady being attacked.
Most of those in power
have no knowledge
of what happens to ordinary people and defend the rights of those
who have done wrong.
Bring back the cane, let those of over 30 be allowed to clip a young
hood around the head, 5 years
for carrying a knife and life for carrying a gun, 2 years imprisonment
for men that do not give up
their seats to ladies and any female caught fighting should be named
and shamed.
So too should anyone who causes a nuisance to others. Make anyone
who is politically correct
live in a rough part of London for a year and have public executions
on a Sunday (live on Sky)
for all those who harm children.
Well that enough to get me taken off Barnet4U but this is the way
that quite a lot of the people
I speak to think.
Too soft on the criminals and to hard on you and me is what they
say and if any politically correct
person thinks that is wrong I can bring forward 10 others who will
disagree. Free speech for all!!!!
There are really nice people in Barnet but the thieves and robbers
should realise that there are
many people who have known each other for years and the "Rock
a Char" people know who I mean.
This network of people who know each other through connections or
friendship runs into thousand
and most of them love this town and would put an X in the right
place if only local politicians
actually came out and met the people in the pubs instead of tea
rooms.
Hooded yobos hanging about Sainsbury's are a nuisance and the cure
would be for all the 40
and 50 year old to put on flat caps and go down there and sort them
out…or…take their pictures
and publish them on posters.
or.. let their parents know…or have a high police presence…or
play classical music.
or (AND MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL) speak to the kids and get them
somewhere that they can
use instead of standing around street corners or you local park.
I am in my late 50,s and from my generation to our kids generation
old fashioned politicians
and councilors have done NOTHING to give the kids something to do.
Most of us had somewhere to go in our youth and in the sixties Finchley
and Barnet always
had dances on the weekend that we could go to (Con club/Rock-a-char).
These kids are what
we were but they have everything they want except for the cure of
boredom. How many of you
can remember how boring Sundays were?
The good thing is that the local police are trying to do something
about the crime rate (by local
I mean those based in Barnet and Not Colindale). If you report a
crime you are helping to keep
the crime rate down.
Don't let the scumbags get away with it as they would squeal like
pigs if you took something
from them.
Support your local police and let's see what happens. If they let
us down we need to know
the reasons.
Write to Barnet4u and have your say. Get the kids somewhere to go.
Report a crime and
shop a creep.
IT'S A CRIME (part 2)
Dear Matt,
Re your letter "IT'S
A CRIME" where you described judges as Muppets.
I feel this is a slur on our Judicial system and you are mocking
people in high places who you should
respect. They are doing a job and know the law. Please retract this
statement.
Law abiding citizen of East Barnet
Dear law abiding citizen (are you real?) I would firstly
like to apologise for calling judges Muppets
as muppets would be offended.
Not all judges are bad but today I heard on the news that three
men kicked a man to death and
they got 15 years for taking that man away from the mother he lived
with and the girlfriend he
had just walked to the bus stop. Could have been your brother or
friend.
I rest my case
POLITICALLY WRONG
Dear Matt,
What's the word on our local politicians?
Another local drinker
Politicians are a funny breed as most of us never meet
them in our day to day life.
They suddenly come out of the woodwork saying they have lived in
the area for all of their lives
but nobody on the circuit knows them.
Get real politicians, the pub drinkers of Barnet go there for various
reasons and people talk
and local issues like Barnet F.C, the old Fire station and the hood
rats hanging about outside
Sainsbury's is discussed and older men say they would take the law
into their own hands
and this is fact and someday it will happen and this is how they
talk when they socialise in
the local watering holes, not only in Barnet but all over the country.
The
reason why politicians and their like do not understand us is because
their only friends
are people just like them.
How many of you know of a politician who, after finishing at the
House of Commons, stops of
at his local every night (except on weekends) to unwind during the
evening session. There he
or she would be able to listen to what their public say and get
an idea of what is going on, but
that would mean having a bit of personally and understanding.
How many come to your door in person and ask you and your friends
out for a drink and a
chance to discuss local and national issues.
How many of them would sit in a public house with booze filled voters
and answer question
with honesty or knowledge? How many have you met?
I write for Barnet4u and although they do not agree with some of
my comments they give
me a free hand to write what I can prove has been said or seen.
Although I can drink most
of them under the table those who work at Barnet4u have the community
at heart so if you
have anything to say about any local issues you can say it there.
Bring on any more
questions about local politicians, I love it!
I wrote to two of them over 5 months ago and I am still waiting
for a reply.
(See Your Shout on Barnet4U)
POLITICALLY CORRECT
Dear Matt
What's the feeling about immigration among the locals?
P.Wales. New Barnet
Touchy subject as we live in a land where people
are scared to speak how they feel in case they
are accused of being (oh no, that dreaded word) racialist.
I am the son of an immigrant and I love this country.
We now live in a time where do gooders are trying so hard to be
saints before they get to heaven
that they miss reality in their search for a perfect world. In this
world we all live in racial harmony
and just get on with each other.
In the real world we are all have a hatred of a particular thing
or person. Live in harmony?
you cant even get the Tottenham and Asenal supporters to get on
with each other!!!
We now live in a time where saying what you think is a crime because
we are all scared of saying
anything in case we upset some small minority whose feeling are
of more concern than the
majority of the real people who live in this wonderful country.
Saint
George and England I am proud to say but that statement means that
some who reads
this have an opinion of what sort of person Matt is. I am a person
living in the country of my
birth who is fed up with people living here who have no loyalty
to this country. I am a not a
member of any political party and my views on religion are between
me and my god.
I listen to black, I listen to white, I laugh at Irish jokes and
count curry as one of my favourite
meals. I like reggae, Scottish whisky, Sweet and sour pork, Salt
beef sandwiches, freedom of
speech and being English.
If people come to this country, like your or my parents did, and
remember this is a Christian
based country who through that faith accepts all religions they
will be accepted and embraced.
To all those others who suck up and abuse our hospitality I am not
allowed to state on a family
web site what I think.
When Mr Patel up at my local newsagents complains about illegal
immigrants we stand together.
Let's all have ID cards and be made to wear them on St George's
day so that we can see those
who are not meant to be here. I know, lets all pick a country in
the world where we would like to
live and when we get there we will not bother to learn that countries
language,fill their hospitals
and not bother to pay, and generally make a fuss everytime we think
we are hard done by.
Gets up my nose if people do not learn our language and customs
(like queuing up, saying thank
you or please).
It's not racial to say you are worried about the number of people
they are letting into the country.
It's not a hatred of people from another land as I know Arsenal
supporters who hate Tottenham
supporters.
It's just being fair to those who do not like to see their country
go down the pan because others
step aboard and spoil it.
It's not such a problem in our town but I bet there are a few people
out there who have lost out
on a council house because of this situation. I drink with all colours
and nationalities (except
Chelsea supporters-joke!)
but I do wish that certain religions would lighten up and come down
the pub to mix and meet
the community.
They do not have to drink alcohol or come on a karaoke night.
Lighten up world, we are not here long enough to worry about the
colour of our skin or fight
and kill for a belief.
