THE EAST BARNET FESTIVAL
SATURDAY JULY 1st
The weather was good and even though the England game would mean the crowd would be down it
did not deter the
bands that turned up to show how much talent there is in Barnet.

The event opened about 12.30 with a young local band called THE TWICE who cancelled a holiday to play and deserved to open both days. Even though they were not with the full band they put on a show and proved they have the confidence to go further.
Next up was ARRAN who deserves a pat on the back when he stepped in at the last minute due to a band called "Sixes and Sevens" who failed to appear. If you have seen Arran you will know how good he is and his solo act went down very well with the crowd. In fact he was so good we asked him back the following day.
A bit of Brazil came to East Barnet next with local musician MIKEY BIGGS and his band TRIO AZEVEDO blowing people away with a set that you should not miss if you ever hear where the band are playing. With their Brazilian Shirts (they were unaware that Brazil would go out of the world cup that night) and happy music it was a bit of a carnival in the park there for awhile. Although the band were good they were over shadowed by two children who took to the stage. First there was Mikies Daughter, Ingrid, who danced her way into the audiences hearts. When they had finished their set JACKIE BROWN was brought on stage for the band and audience to sing him happy birthday. A great part of the day.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JACK
We had rocked with THE TWICE, got laid back with ARRAN and got into the party with TRIO AZEVEDO. Now it was the turn of Reggae music to drift over the park with local Reggae producer KEITH FINCH and his HEROES OF KINGSTON. A very hard set which was a journey through reggae music through the eyes of a youth growing up in Barnet. A special thank you as Keith filled in at the last moment due to the cancellation of a well known reggae star.
I will always remember the next act as they were so good I missed the England game and did not have to go through all those emotions with the others watching the match on the big screen that had been set up in the park. There would have been many more happy people if they had seen and heard FREE AGAIN. Close you eyes and you were back in the seventies listening to some good rock. Playing classic songs such as "Alright now" and "Wishing well" they also covered numbers by Bad Company. An act worth looking out for. Watch this space!
Its was the second half of the England v Portugal game when SADIE took the stage. Rooney had been sent off and the moans from the tent were drowned out by the sounds of another local band who were found by a well recorded CD that they sent in.
Another example of the emerging bands that we have around here.
The England game was into extra time when we brought a bit of culture to the festival with the debut of "THE BARNET BARD". Nearly everyone knows Cornish in the village and even though he speaks in a strange dialect he's lived in Barnet so long he is treated like a local.
We will be re-producing the poem on BARNET4U soon and we need more of this
.
And so to our last act for this Saturdays concert and we went out with a bang with local blues masters HOKUM.
This was a treat for anyone who likes music as they rocked through blues standards with their own interpretations.
Another local band not to miss if you see them advertised and I would personally like to thank them for making an "old man" happy. A great way to finish the day

SUNDAY JULY 2nd 2006
Once again the day kicked off with THE TWICE who had their full line up and sounded 100% better. Got a great sound but the set was spoiled by the lead singer swearing at what is a family function. This could go against the band in the future
Now if you like a bit of rocking pop you would love SHADY DEAL who come on strong with energy powered songs that we all know and recognise.
A great set for so early in the day and a special mention should be made as some of them had to travel far, although they are well known on the Barnet circuit. Welcome back anytime
As someone said "VIAGRA FALLS is probably the best named band in Barnet"and they never let you down if you want a good show. Their set was steady and solid as they won new fans. Popular with the other bands in Barnet look, out for VIAGRA FALLS if you see them advertised

If ever there is a man in Barnet who has campaigned for local Barnet bands its DAVE COX. Today he came along with his excellent THREE and they entertained the crowd with their usual professionalism. A popular local band who take the time to seek out places that music can be played in. See them around town this summer
I had heard about THE TEXAS FLYERS but never seen them until they came bounding on stage with a larger than life singer who just oozed with enthusiasm and Rock and Roll. If your heart can take it check out TEXAS FLYERS as their energy is hard to describe in words (you should have been there)
Their lead singer Steve is an advert for all of us to have surgery!!!

Two acts to go and up step CRAFTY to play their original material which I know won a few people over to this rockin' good band. I have seen this band grow in confidence in the last few years and today they gave a performance that will leave many wanting to see CRAFTY again
While the final band were setting up the crowd were entertained once again by ARRAN and THE BARNET BARD until it was time for
the final appearance of SCHWEET AZZ

In their short time together SCHWEET AZZ have built up a reputation of being up there with the top bands in Barnet's musical history. The fans went wild up on the hill and the young and old started dancing as the band ripped though a variety of songs adapted to their style. What a great way the end the festival and although a sad occasion SCHWEET AZZ went off in a blaze of glory.

And so ended the 2006 East Barnet Festival. It took ages to organise and it seemed it was over in a flash.
I would like to thank all the bands that turned up and performed so professionally. I have for years believed in the talent in
Barnet and you showed that we need somewhere to see this talent. Thanks everyone and I hope I have made a few
new friends.

I would also like to thank Barry Ainsworth for giving me the opportunity to fore fill a dream
